Carkeek beach park in the golden hour {Kirkland, WA family photographer}

My second beach session on Sunday had a totally different feel than the morning on the lake:  bright, golden sun and lots of other people to work around.  But those challenges were overcome with the help of two willing assistants and an amazing subject!  We had a great time, with lots of hair zhuzhing, several outfit changes, a little sassiness, and lots of beautiful, twinkly smiles.  🙂

Morning at the lake {Kirkland, WA family photographer}

Around here, you just never know what you’re going to get for weather at the lake in the morning.  For this family’s session, we ended up with clouds and fog, which started lifting on the way home of course.  But what many people don’t realize is that the light in clouds and fog can be lovely — diffuse, soft and even.  As for the cool air, this family warmed things up quickly with their fun personalities and great smiles.  And big sis was the best assistant and brother wrangler I think I’ve ever had!  I might have to hire her for my next session…  🙂

Worth the wait {Kirkland, WA newborn photographer}

I seem to have gotten behind on my blog posts this summer. but didn’t want to keep this family waiting, so I guess I’ll be working backwards in time.  Miss H’s session was actually on the schedule for the beginning of the summer, but due to some unexpected time in the NICU, we postponed it until her two month birthday.  I have to say she was well worth the wait!  What a fighter in so many ways — not only has she made great strides in her recovery, but she really didn’t want to sleep for me either!  She definitely made me work for it.  🙂  This little girl has got so much going for her with amazing parents, big sister and extended family — she will have so much support and love in her life in all the things to come.  It was a privilege for me to document this time in her life.

Sisters {Kirkland, WA family photographer}

There is nothing more fun than capturing the interactions between siblings, whether it be loving, silly, frustrated or giggly — in my eyes, it’s all picture worthy.  These sisters were especially wonderful to photograph because of the age differences — I find there is a special bond and sense of understanding there.  (I’m personally fond of these relationships because my sister is 15 years younger than me and I miss spending time with her) .  This family was so great to work with, had lots of personality, and the weather was perfect, so all in all, a fabulous session.

Babies! {Kirkland, WA newborn photographer}

This post took a bit longer to get up than I had hoped, but sometimes, life just gets in the way of your plans.  Anyway, a few weeks back, I attended an amazing, hands-on newborn workshop with the very talented Charlotte Gamache Photography.  And as there were only two of us participating, it was REALLY hands-on!  I had the opportunity to pick blankets, props and hats, and then work these sweet babies through a number of poses.  And of course, just hold and rock them, which was an added bonus as my baby is now eight and it’s not quite the same.   It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to incorporating all I learned to my next newborn session, which could be any day now!  Here are some of the images I captured…

“One”derful {Kirkland, WA family photographer}

I was so excited to photograph this adorable one-year-old and her family in the gorgeous sunshine last weekend, especially as I had taken her newborn photos last year.  It is so amazing to see how much the little ones change in a year!  Miss “K” still has her beautiful head of hair, round cheeks and bright blue eyes, but add on talking and walking and busy, busy, busy!  It made for a very fun session.

Laughing in the rain {Kirkland, WA family photograher}

After about seven reschedules due to the weather, we got caught in the rain anyway.  But this family was so much fun and such good sports, we just giggled and laughed our way through it.  Besides, I had been wanting to do a session with these cute umbrellas and couldn’t have asked for a more perfect family to use them!

Thank you Mother Nature {Bellevue, WA family photographer}

After an initial reschedule due to weather, we were a bit nervous about this last weekend’s session, as the forecast called for showers.  However, Mother Nature came through for us and we were able to do the session outside in the sun in this lovely family’s beautiful backyard.  Even without the sun, their amazing smiles created all the warmth and light we needed, don’t you agree?

Almost family {Kirkland, WA family photographer}

I LOVE this family!   We’ve shared so much with them over the years, we are practically related at this point.  And I feel so privileged to document their growing boys each year.  We always have such a great time, as you can tell.  🙂  Thanks for another year of friendship and fun!

On the road {Kirkland, WA family photographer}

I had the opportunity to spend last weekend in Bend, OR for a great workshop focusing on the business side of kerry B photography.  Not only did I learn a ton, but I was able to spend a little time with my parents AND shoot a photo session with a Seattle-area client.  Turns out, the family was going to be in Bend at the same time as me — how fortuitous!  So, we scheduled the session for a beautiful night at one of their favorite locations (they are a family of rock climbers) — Smith Rock.  And it was all that I could have asked for: gorgeous light and scenery and an adorable mom and daughter duo just oozing fun and love for each other.  A photographer’s dream.  Lucky me.  🙂
